air1-imgAir1 Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF)

Chesapeake Petroleum is the regional headquarters for Air1 by Yara, the leading producer of diesel exhaust fluid (DEF).  Air1 is the most common brand of DEF used by manufacturers in new trucks at the time of delivery to customers.  Manufacturers choose Air1 because it is guaranteed to be free of impurities that can harm vehicles’ catalysts, thereby meeting the requirements for vehicle warranties.

Introduced in the United States in 2010, DEF is a federally mandated, high-purity solution of urea in water (32.5%) used to chemically reduce Nox emissions from trucks and buses powered by diesel engines. DEF is contained in a separate vehicle tank and sprayed into diesel vehicles’ exhaust gases.  DEF should never be added to diesel fuel or put in a fuel tank.

Relatively small quantities of DEF are required compared to diesel fuel.  DEF consumption will be approximately 3 percent of diesel fuel consumption (for every 100 gallons of diesel consumed, 3 gallons DEF will be used).  Therefore, it will not be necessary to replenish DEF every time you refuel.

DEF is non-toxic and will not harm humans or animals. It is not explosive and will not burn. If skin or clothes are exposed, rinse with large quantities of water.

Air1 DEF is currently available in bottles, drums, IBCs and bulk. Choosing Air1 brings you reliability and reassurance!

DEF Do’s

  • Keep your DEF equipment clean and free from dust or dirt.
  • You do not need to wear protective clothing while filling DEF.
  • If over-heated, DEF containers can be chilled by standing them in water.
  • DEF freezes at 12OF.
  • Only use DEF that has been delivered in dedicated, sealed DEF packages.

DEF Don’ts

  • Do not fill DEF into the Diesel tank!
